Honoring the Seen and Unseen
Women have always answered the call to serve—long before they were officially recognized for it.
From the Revolutionary War to today’s modern military, women have contributed to the strength, resilience, and success of the United States Armed Forces. Some served openly in uniform. Others served in disguise, as nurses, spies, codebreakers, pilots, and support personnel—roles that were often overlooked, undocumented, or dismissed.
Women like Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a male soldier in the Continental Army. Thousands of women who served as nurses during the Civil War. The “Hello Girls” of World War I who operated military switchboards overseas. The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II who flew aircraft but were not granted military status until decades later.
And today, women serve in every branch, in combat roles, leadership positions, and specialized fields once closed to them—continuing a legacy that has always existed, even when history failed to record it.
Yet, recognition has not always come easily.
Many women veterans returned home without acknowledgment, benefits, or the validation afforded to their male counterparts. Their service—though critical—was often categorized as “support” rather than essential. Their sacrifices, both visible and invisible, were minimized or forgotten.
That is why Women Veterans’ Recognition Day matters. Our goal is to honor the seen and unseen service and sacrifice of women veterans across U.S. history.
On May 30, 2026, we come together at Equus Run Vineyard in Midway, KY to honor the courage, commitment, and contributions of women who served—both those whose stories are widely known and those whose stories are still being uncovered.
