Statistics on Women Veterans

Statistics on Active Duty Women

Based on the 2022 Demographics Report from Military OneSource, here is a compiled list of key statistics and trends about women in the military:​​​​

Active-Duty Enlisted Members

- Total number: 1,067,756   

- Percentage of females: 17.1% (182,388) 

 - Percentage of males: 82.9% (885,368)

Trends of Active-Duty Enlisted Members by Branch (2005-2022)

 - Increase in the number of female active-duty enlisted members across all service branches since 2015   

- Specific numbers (2022):   

   Army: 54,205 females (14.7%)     

   Navy: 58,542 females (20.7%)     

   Marine Corps: 14,344 females (9.4%)     

   Air Force: 54,559 females (21.0%)   

   Space Force: 738 females (19.4%)

Active-Duty Officers

- Total number: 236,964 

- Percentage of females: 19.7% 

- Percentage of males: 80.3%

Trends in Active-Duty Members by Service Branch (2005-2022)

- Decrease of 8.3% in male active-duty members compared to 2005   

- Increase of 14.2% in female active-duty members compared to 2005

Ratio of Enlisted Members to Officers by Gender

 - Overall: 4.7 male enlisted personnel for every male officer; 3.9 female enlisted personnel for every female officer   

- Marine Corps: Highest ratio with 7.2 to 1 (male) and 6.8 to 1 (female)   

- Space Force: Lowest ratio with 0.9 to 1 for both genders

Number & Ratio of Active-Duty Officers by Service Branch Trends (2005-2022)

Increase in the number of female active-duty officers across all service branches since 2010   

- 2022 numbers:     

- Army: 17,631 females (18.7%)     

- Navy: 11,811 females (20.9%)     

- Marine Corps: 2,096 females (9.8%)     

- Air Force: 14,244 females (23.4%)    - Space Force: 796 females (18.9%)

GENERAL STATISTICS

  • Women veterans have a 3.3% unemployment rate versus male veterans, who have a 3.0% unemployment rate.

  • 78% of veterans served during wartime.

  • There are ​16.2 million veterans in the United States.

  • 4.75 million veterans hold some service-related disability status.

  • 1.26 million veterans are of Hispanic or Latino ethnicity.

  • Males make up 82.5% (1,075,753) of the active-duty members.

  • There are 4.7 male enlisted members for every 1 male officer.

  • Racial and ethnic minorities make up over one-third of active-duty military members.

  • 7.2% of active-duty are dual-military households.

  • 41.73% of the male U.S. population aged 75 or older are veterans.
