More Than a Moment: Honoring Women Veterans’ Full Legacy
Women’s military service is not a recent chapter in American history. It is woven throughout the nation’s story.
For generations, women have served in ways both recognized and unrecognized. They served during the American Revolution as nurses, spies, messengers, and even soldiers. During the Civil War, more than 400 women are estimated to have fought in Union and Confederate armies, often disguised as men. In World War I, roughly 35,000 women officially served as nurses and support staff, including the “Hello Girls,” who operated military telephone lines overseas.
During World War II, nearly 350,000 American women served in uniform, including in the Women’s Army Corps, WAVES, and Women Airforce Service Pilots. Many performed essential work in intelligence, communications, aviation, logistics, and medical care. Yet many women had to wait years—sometimes decades—for their service to be fully recognized.
In 1948, the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act gave women permanent status in the regular and reserve armed forces. In 2013, the Department of Defense began opening ground combat roles to women, and by January 2016, all military occupations and positions were opened to women without exception.
Women Veterans’ Recognition Day is a reminder that service has never looked just one way. It honors the women whose names are recorded in history and the women whose contributions were overlooked, minimized, or forgotten.
On May 30, 2026, we invite you to join us at Equus Run Vineyard in Midway, Kentucky, as we celebrate women veterans, bringing awareness that their service is more than a moment - and that it is their legacy, and their continued impact on our communities.
The day will include speakers, music, food, a scavenger hunt, and more as we come together in recognition, gratitude, and community.
