June marks Pride Month, a time to honor and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community—including the many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual individuals who have served, and continue to serve, our nation with distinction.
Throughout U.S. history, LGBTQIA+ service members have faced significant challenges. Policies like “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” forced many to hide their identities, and transgender individuals have navigated shifting regulations regarding their right to serve openly.
In recent months, changes in federal policies have led to the rollback of DEI initiatives across military and veteran institutions. This has included the removal of content celebrating the contributions of LGBTQIA+ service members and the disbandment of support programs. Such actions have raised concerns about the erasure of important histories and the support structures vital to our diverse military community.
Despite these challenges, the resilience and dedication of LGBTQIA+ veterans and service members continue to shine. Organizations and advocates are working tirelessly to preserve the histories and ensure the well-being of those who have served.
As we celebrate Pride Month, we reaffirm our commitment to recognizing and honoring the full spectrum of identities within our veteran community. Your stories matter—your service matters. And your pride is powerful.
To every LGBTQIA+ veteran and active duty service member—thank you. This month, and every month, we honor all of who you are.
